How do you turn total chaos into an exciting and challenging experience? Make up a relay race where you have to exchange the race bib! We had 49 teams, with two of them having 3 athletes, resulting in 100 racers crowded in front of the Hollyburn Lodge for the start. Our second biggest turnout!
As usual, something adds to the excitement, and this time it was a cancelled groom due to Patrol having to attend to a patient on Unknown Lakes. This meant the bulk of the race route, Sitzmark, was not groomed. Added to that was some warm sunshine causing snow bombs to drop from trees onto the trails, so it was a bit of an obstacle course.
Everyone embraced these hurdles and developed some interesting (if not effective) ways to efficiently pass the bib on to their partner. The rules were DSQ if the bib was not readable as you left the exchange area, and it got pretty close for a couple of teams.
A big “Thank You!” to everyone who helped out for this season’s races. This is an excellent opportunity for young racers to get comfortable experiencing a low stress race environment, and for mature racers to enjoy the fun and good times a meeting like this can produce. A big thanks to Cypress Mountain for continuing to support the race series. Thanks also go out to all the sponsors for their generous draw prizes; the race often takes second place to the suspense of who’s name gets pulled out of the hat.
