Who are the instructors you ask?…
Justine has been lucky enough to kayak all over the world, exploring wild places and beautiful coastlines, teaching at events, making friends and capturing some of the excitement of sea kayaking on film. She has produced multiple award-winning sea kayaking and adventure films. She can’t help sea kayaking around islands including Tasmania, New Zealand’s South Island, Isla Grande in Tierra del Fuego, Haida Gwaii & Ireland. She joined Sarah Outen on a world first journey to kayak 2,500km along the Aleutian island chain and Alaskan peninsula.
Justine’s goals are to enjoy life, keep exploring, spend time with friends and make time to pick the berries. In an effort to achieve these goals she says, “I don’t take myself too seriously, try not to get stressed by the small stuff, and I try to always be positive.” Her favourite place to paddle is the tidal races of North Wales, especially the South Stack. Justine is an exceptional expedition sea kayaker, her travels and experiences have placed her among the world’s best, and she is a proud member of the Kokatat Pro Team.
Krista Growing up near the water, Krista has a knowledge and comfort in the water and in kayaks that reaches far below the surface. From learning to kayak at the age of 9, she began guiding and instructing shortly after high school and continues to enjoy teaching others in her spare time. She’s been an instructor for several companies, including Deep Cove Kayak and Outward Bound Canada, and took a whitewater kayak semester in Chile just for fun! Currently, she is a Masters student at UBC studying coastal ecosystems. You’ll pick her out on the beach by her bright smile and relaxed personality, but she is a ton of fun to hang out with on the water – and has plenty of fun marine life facts if you ask nicely!
Meaghan has been teaching sea kayaking since the summer of 2000. In that time she has worked with numerous organizations in a multitude of interesting places. Her work experience includes School Director for the Ecomarine Coastal Kayaking School as well as Instructor Trainer with SKILS. She is a Paddle Canada Level-2 instructor Trainer, a Level-3 Instructor and was one of the first women to achieve Level-4 skills certification. Meaghan recently made a move to the Sunshine Coast where she is now exploring new waters
Raised on the Pacific waters of Vancouver Island, some may call Kate Hives amphibious! Starting kayaking at an early age, Kate has had a committed love affair with the natural world. Turning her passion into a career, she has worked as an outdoor educator, instructor and guide both commercially and in adaptive settings with school students and adults from around the world. A graduate of Lakehead University, with an Honours BA in Outdoor Recreation Parks and Tourism and Masters in Environmental Practice from Royal Roads University, she has continued to pursue her training in the outdoors. Kate has worked with Liquid Skills Kayak School and United World College in South East Asia. She is a SKGABC Level 3 Guide with Class 4 Waters Endorsement, Guide Trainer and Examiner; a white water kayak Level 2 Instructor Leader with CKC; and a Level 2 Instructor with Paddle Canada. While she travels the world, Kate remains a ‘West Coast Girl’ and has been returning to the BC coast for the past 15 years guiding paddlers through its western waters.
We would like to welcome our additional Instructors: Katie Weinstein, Vanessa Iverson, Dan Cullen and Christina Chowaniec
