  1. XC Tuesday Night Race – March 13th

    Hello Skiers!

It was sad to bring our race season to a close, but we did it in style with 84 racers on course and a frenzy of bib exchanges in the start area. That’s a new record for racers since I started doing this. There was a good mix of teams with almost all skating, but a couple of stalwarts out on their classic gear.

We saw some very good performances, with 4 young racers driven as much by ego as muscles trying to beat each other. Zane and Max kept ahead or Matan and Fran by 13 seconds, which might have been the difference between one good bib exchange. Two usually fast skiers were 5 minutes behind, Nico and Blakely were on classic skis, so that turns out to be a very good performance. Lindsay and Emmajean kept well ahead of several other skiers.

In the two lap race, the young Hollyburn athletes showed their strength with Quinn and Ryan keeping 47 seconds ahead of Aiden and Dustin. Our fastest female team was Maddi and Julia putting in an impressive time.

The banquet was very tasty, with a nice presentation by the Hollyburn Lodge staff; thanks to all of you for your hard work! Following that was the draw prizes, and what an impressive list of items was there to be won. Tasty chocolates from Thomas Haas, equally tasty coffee from Moja, skis from Salomon, two pairs of skis from Madshus, poles from Swix, clothing from KV+, hats and other items from Deep Cove Outdoors and a Starlight and Full season’s pass from Cypress Mountain. A few names were drawn for people who couldn’t make it, but others won more than one item as they had raced several times. Don’t miss the banquet next year!

Thanks to all who participated in the events over the season; those who helped out putting on the races; and the Hollyburn staff who kept us all in line and provided course control.

One of the more popular events is the Biathlon race held each season. Contrary to certain people’s ideas, we don’t shoot rifles down ski school flats during lessons! (Although that might be an interesting experience for both the athletes and the moving targets!) A much safer range uses hockey balls and plastic bins, with Range Officer Bruno keeping an eye on scores and collecting errant balls.

This time we gave our younger racers a shorter course, cutting off the trip to the bottom,  but we didn’t distinguish that in the results, so the adult handicap is not documented. The results speak for themselves, with Eli, Aidan, Ryan, Dustin, Quinn, Lucas, Oliver and Eamon crushing Fran and Blakely. Julia even beat Evgeniy! This shows how well our young racers are improving!

Remember the final race has a banquet of pulled pork and refreshment. Register by midnight Sunday at Webscorer here:
