Inspired by these passionate users, Salus was created because they saw a desire for Personal Flotation Devices that fit your individual needs. Their patented manufacturing process eliminates the hard square edges found in traditional PFD construction, making Salus vests soft, pliable and comfortable for your every movement. Comfort, style, function and attention to detail are all apart of what makes their vests unique!

Water-play looms large in the collective Canadian psyche. Perhaps it is because we are a nation rich in water with over 31 thousand freshwater lakes & rivers covering almost 8% of our country. Or perhaps because we have the longest coastline of any country in the world. Whatever the root, our nation’s passion for water-play inspired the humble beginnings of Salus Marine Wear Inc. 

In 1999, in the basement of his home in Waterloo Ontario, Steve Wagner designed the first Salus PFD, focusing on comfort, quality, function, style and attention to detail.

Today, the Canadian manufacturer services paddlers, sailors, active families, and rescue professionals in Canada and around the world with its award-winning PFDs. Known as an industry innovator, Salus’ patented PFD designs have garnered industry accolades and international attention. That said, innovation in design is not the only thing that sets Salus apart.

Every Salus PFD is made in Canada, in their Waterloo Ontario factory. Using the same attention to detail and quality that earned Salus its reputation as an industry leader, each PFD is cut, assembled and sewn by Canadians who take exceptional pride in their work.

PFD Use and Care

General Care

We recommend rinsing your Salus PFD in clean fresh water after each use. Rinse thoroughly if used in saltwater. Drip-dry in the shade (or out of direct sunlight). Dry completely before storing. Try not to store PFDs in sealed containers or under anything heavy, the best way to store your PFDs if possible is to hang them up and keep in a dry, ventilated area.

There are a few checks you can do to your PFDs each season to make sure they are still in good working order.

1. Buoyancy Test:

Put the PFD on. It should fit properly with all zippers and buckles correctly secured. Ease yourself into the water or walk into water up to your neck. Lift your legs and tilt your head back, in a relaxed floating position. You should float comfortably without any physical effort.

1. PFD Inspection:

Regularly inspect all zippers, buckles and seams. Should any of these areas appear to be not in working order you should repair or replace your PFD.

Cleaning

When extra cleaning is necessary, Salus PFDs should be hand washed using a mild detergent and hung to dry in a well-ventilated area. Do not put your PFD in the washing machine, dryer, use bleach or dry clean.

It is very important that flotation products are completely dry prior to being stored. If stored when damp, flotation products can develop mold, mildew and be left with permanent stains.
